National Consumer Protection Week: How Old National Bank Helps Safeguard Clients from Fraud

Fraud continues to evolve, becoming more sophisticated and harder to spot, especially as more financial activity moves online. During National Consumer Protection Week (March 1-7), Old National Bank is reaffirming its commitment to helping clients stay informed, protected, and supported in the fight against fraud.

“At Old National, fraud protection is not just about technology, it’s about people,” said Old National’s Fraud Management Director. “Our goal is to identify suspicious activity early, step in quickly, and help clients feel confident that their bank is actively looking out for them.”

Proactive monitoring and early intervention

One of the most important ways Old National protects clients is through continuous transaction monitoring. Advanced systems analyze account activity for unusual patterns, helping teams identify potential fraud before it escalates. When something doesn’t look right, trained specialists review the activity and take action — our banking center staff will often reach out directly to clients to confirm whether a transaction is legitimate.

“Fraudsters often rely on urgency and confusion,” said ONB’s Fraud Management Director. “If something feels rushed and confusing, we suggest slowing down or take a pause to think about what is being asked and contact Old National. That pause gives us the opportunity to verify activity, ask the right questions, and protect our clients from losses that could otherwise happen very quickly.”

This proactive approach is especially critical as scams increasingly involve impersonation — where criminals pose as banks, businesses, or even government agencies to trick people into sharing information or moving money.

Education as a line of defense

Technology alone isn’t enough. That’s why education plays a central role in Old National’s fraud‑prevention strategy. During National Consumer Protection Week and throughout the year, the bank shares tips, resources, and reminders designed to help clients recognize red flags and protect their personal and financial information.

Common guidance includes being cautious of unsolicited calls, texts, or emails; never sharing login credentials or one‑time passcodes; and independently verifying requests before taking action, even from someone claiming to be from Old National.  Clients are also encouraged to trust their instincts — if something feels off, it probably is.

“Fraud prevention works best when it’s a partnership,” said ONB’s Fraud Management Director. “We can put safeguards in place, but informed clients are our strongest allies. Asking questions and taking a moment to verify can make all the difference.”

Supporting clients when fraud happens

Despite best efforts, fraud can still occur. When it does, Old National focuses on quick response and clear communication. Teams work with clients to secure accounts, review transactions, and guide them through next steps — all with an emphasis on minimizing disruption and restoring confidence.

The bank also collaborates across teams to identify emerging trends and strengthen controls, helping protect not just individual clients but the broader community.

National Consumer Protection Week: commitment that goes beyond one week

National Consumer Protection Week serves as an important reminder, but Old National’s commitment to fraud protection extends far beyond a single week on the calendar. From ongoing team member training to enhanced monitoring tools and client education, fraud prevention is built into everyday operations.

“Trust is at the heart of banking,” said ONB’s Fraud Management Director. “Our responsibility is to protect that trust by staying vigilant, adapting to new threats, and standing beside our clients every step of the way.”

As fraud tactics continue to change, Old National remains focused on what matters most — protecting clients, empowering them with knowledge, and helping ensure their financial well‑being today and into the future.
